Model Base and Initial Assembly

Well, I hope you do not mind two posts on the assembly of the amazing new crane model, the PTC from Mammoet. I admire Paul for getting his up so quickly, but I am in the game now.

Today started off with decaling two models for a customer-done. Then it was on to hanging 70 feet of gutter on the shop to prevent a repeat of this winters flood-done. Then take care of the dogs with a session of ball in the now clear and dry backyard, the first day like this since October of 07-done. Oh yea, then build the below PTC crane stand, my beginnings:

All good ideas start with a plan on paper:

And a good set of dado blades in a table saw:

I believe that if you need strength in wood a tongue and grove joint works real well:

The under side of the table received two cross members with unique little cut outs in the upper coners. My design would then allow me to slid a piece of 1/2" conduit through the cutouts and be able to lift and carry the PTC model on the table, like a strecher between two people. I also added friction free drawer slide tape to the bottom edge of the boards to allow the whole table to slide on the carpet easily.

A quick coat of grey primer on the top and gloss varnish on the sides

After that it was matter of laying out the base plate area so my diorama gravel could be set up, using the liner provided in the box helped a lot:

Position the crane base pads and fill in the rest:

And add the ring, and a few Mammoet pieces and men and call it one heck of a busy Saturday.

Tomorrow: Assembly (watch out Mr. Rose!)
