Mammoet CAT 14H Motor Grader
Hello Randy Krieg and the rest of the group! Today I finished my
tribute to the road grader in Mammoet colors! For those who are newer to
the forum and to the rest of us who have enjoyed Randy’s posts, let me
tell you the story of how a crane like me wound do the below conversion.
First as most of you know I am not into the dirt stuff. Sure its neat,
but its all earth bound. I like cranes which make things fly. Like
many of us here on the forum I read most every post, even the dirt ones
because I always enjoy the friendly banter plus I learn stuff, a
favorite hobby of mine. Could be I pick up a painting tip or learn something
new about equipment-like the road grader. Now to tell the truth I had
never given a road grader a second thought. In fact if I did it was,
what a useless piece of equipment-awful big for something that just
pushes a little dirt. Always seemed like a duplication of effort-a dozer
does the same thing right?
Then one day I read a very complicated post by this guy named Randy
Krieg, and he went on and on about mold boards (rotten wood????) and
angles of wheels and ridge things and a bunch of diagrams of crooked
wheels. It also turns out that this guy Randy happened to be one of the
authors/contributors to Cat’s road grader operator manual. I figured I
should show some respect.
Then he posted pictures of some custom models he hand built, including
one shovel everyone on the dirt side went ape over and a picture of a
truck that blew me away. I was like wow, a true hobbyist and artist.
Then one day there were pictures he took from his cab of some fighter
jets taking off like 10 yards away. And then the most amazing picture
of him using the motor grader doing something amazing-peeling a little
6” wide strip of asphalt and rolling it over like it was so much pastry
at a bakery. And he did it for miles! I could not even imagine
anything like that and neither had the crews who were prepared to dig it out
by hand.
Then one fine day there was this post of him in his grader with the
left front wheel hanging out in space about 6’ over empty air while he
graded the side of a road at an absurd angle. I must have stared at that
post for an hour wondering how the heck you would do that or even think
that way.
It was then that I decided to break ranks with the crane brotherhood
and buy a motor grader as my personal tribute to my new found respect for
that amazing machine. Since then I have enjoyed Randy’s posts and have
also gained the friendship of another forum friend Steve (Iowa) who is
also a road grader operator. I have never looked at one the same.
So Randy, here is my tribute to you for teaching me a thing or two
about the road grader and the people who operate them-however I just had to
convert to Mammoet-as many of you know this is an illness I have. I
hope you enjoy it! And Randy, if you still have the pictures I have
referred to, could you please post them again in this thread for those who
may have missed them.
