Recipe for LR1280 Mammoet Part 4

Hello again group. Today we would like to offer our forth and final episode of a recipe of LR1280 Mammoet. As we last left it all painting and baking and the sub assemblies and been put back to their original form. Today we go for final assembly of the LR1280 Mammoet!! For those of you who may have missed our three previous episodes, do not worry, you can visit the web site at the end of the show and buy your very own copy to treasure forever!! Okay lets dig in!

First thing we have to do with our double batch is to pack up the LR1280 for trafedeputy and get it ready to go back to him. I usually pack the repaints with wax paper as a liner in the preformed sleeves as it prevents the paint from sticking to the styrene.

Next we simply begin the assembly process by attaching our crawlers, add the counter weights and walkways. All in all about a five minute process that forms the foundation and the heart of our crane. Starting to look yummy!!

Now comes a little deviation that I think adds a nice touch to the whole crane, I add Cortland Musky master fish line in lieu of the standard line from Conrad. It looks better, is easy to work with and does not twist. I use the 500 yard spool and transfer it to the drums. In the picture you will see one of my assistants (not me-lol) applying the line.

Okay now its time to rig the A frame. Always a fun project, anchor it so it does not move. Once done add the counter weights and its almost a crane!

Separately I prepare the main mast and luffing jib. At this time I get some black food coloring (Testors Gloss Black Enamel) and go over all the connection points where we have pushed the lattice section together. I also touch up the back side of the pins so they are not grey-remember in the previous post we only colored the tops gray.

A little service work on the drums

The finished mast are laid out ready for attachment to the crane body

Fast forward-zip-and we are all rigged up ready to lift.

And slowly with a helping hand under the mast pull the A frame back with its winch drum and make her climb into the air!!!

As a special treat add a 5500 Starlifter to the display, add garnish and ta-da you have finished the LR1280!!

This project has been a lot of fun and I hope you the viewers have enjoyed it. Please stay tuned for the next exciting recipe!
