Recipe for LR1280 Mammoet Part 2
Welcome to the second installment of Recipe for a LR1280 Mammoet. Recapping briefly from the first part of the show, I had been commissioned to repaint one LR1280 and thought what the heck, lets do a double batch and do one for myself as well. We had gone through disassembly, organizations of parts, stripping and primer coating. Today we will move through the most fun part of the creation process, the applying of paint.
Now when painting you should have a clear cut view of the finished product in your minds eye. Then separate your parts into the piles for the various colors you will be using, in this case read and black. Now remember in this particular case, we will be under laying a red strip on the crane body before our final coat of black.
Today we begin by painting our boom sections with red:

After the boom tips we begin the process of applying two coats of red to the parts of the crane including crawlers, tracks and all the small pieces.
Although this does differ from factory painted Mammoet models, I have elected to take the liberty of hand painting the boom tips black. This does add quite a bit of extra work, however it does make the crane more representative of the actual cranes in Mammoet’s fleet. (off topic-it was done during the Bears nail biting victory last Sunday over the Seahawks).
Now after all of the red is done, I move over to my pile for the black parts. And you will also now need to mask the red strip. I recommend use a model painting masking tape made specifically for the task. I apply the tape and use a tooth pick to rub it on hard and press the tape into all the creases. Then using a tip I learned from forum Master Chef Heavyload (Luc), I apply a light coat of dull coat to seal the creases. Allow it to dry and then apply the black paint as usual.
Now after drng we get to see the result of our amazing underlay by removing the tape:
Here is a close up of the jig I made up to paint the grey plastic pins used for assembling the crane boom sections. Using a drill bit I drilled out wholes slightly larger than the pin, but not the cap. Simply place your pins in the holes and lightly spray the tops of the pins. You do not want to paint the pins themselves as later during assembly, you find it impossible to push them through the boom sections holes.
And finally, we have completed the painting process and are close to finishing our recipe for LR1280 Mammoet.
In our next show we will go over reassembly, decaling and with a little luck erection of the crane!! Till next time-be safe and may all your modeling dreams come true!!
