Making Money from your Hobby, Art or Craft
Creating my soft sculpture art started out as a hobby for me. As my skills improved, I decided to try my hand at selling it - and haven't looked back! My husband also earns money from his hobby - custom painting diecast model construction equipment. It happened quite by accident! More on his story later...
I first started selling my art on eBay as I saw there was an existing market for it on the site. As I sold my work to buyers on eBay, I'd ask them if they'd like to be notified when I had new works available. Eventually I built my own website and started selling my work on both eBay and my site. I had no extra fees when selling my art from my own website. I still sold on eBay, however because they have a HUGE world wide audience. Now I sell primarily on my website, but still use eBay to try to attract new collectors.
I then started using another avenue for selling my work - at art or craft shows. There are still collectors out there who prefer to see things in person before buying. By exhibiting at these shows I am widening my collector base. Quite often, after a collector has bought from me in person, they are then quite happy to buy from my website as they already know the kind of quality they will receive.
Another benefit of traveling to do shows is that your travel and accommodations for the show are a legitimate business expense and thus tax deductible!*. I know of quite a number of people who will plan their family vacations around a specific show. Although the hotel bill before and after will not be deductible, the travel, be it driving, airfare, train fare - IS tax deductible.*
Stay tuned for much more to come!
*I am NOT a tax adviser nor do I pretend to know all of the tax laws which do change yearly. I have a great CPA who does my taxes. I highly recommend finding an experienced CPA for your tax returns and any questions you may have.
